We're Listed in Natural Grocers - USA

Press Release Cape Town, 3 September 2026

ORYX DESERT SALT

BRINGS A NEW CATEGORY OF SALT FROM THE KALAHARI DESERT TO NATURAL GROCERS, USA

Up until now, 3 categories of salt have dominated grocery aisles: table salt, sea salt and pink Himalayan salt.

Oryx Desert Salt has been changing the salt landscape for the last 15 years in South Africa. After launching in Whole Food Markets in 2021, now Oryx increases its availability in the USA by launching in 168 Natural Grocers stores. It’s a vote of confidence and a natural match.

Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage, a premier neighborhood grocery store, is incredibly particular about what they allow onto their shelves.  They describe themselves as ‘not your average grocery store’, and are known for their uncompromising stance on only stocking the best natural, organic, gluten-free, GMO-free and vegan foods in every aisle, cooler and freezer.

They research ingredients, question how products are made, and have a long list of ingredients they simply will not carry.  Oryx Desert Salt is equally obsessed with asking ‘what is actually inside this product?’

Oryx Desert Salt is naturally organic. It is from an ancient underground salt source beneath the Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa. Far away from industry or any pollution, the mineral-rich brine is drawn to the surface and allowed to dry naturally under the hot African sun and wind. In high summer when temperatures can reach 47◦C (117◦ F) it takes just 4 weeks to crystalise, ready to harvest.

There’s no refining. No bleaching. No anti-caking agents. No artificial additives.
Just naturally mineral-rich desert salt.

A lot of conventional table salt is heavily refined. Its naturally occurring trace minerals are stripped away. Anti-caking agents are commonly added to keep it free-flowing. And some table salts even contain additional ingredients such as dextrose (a sugar!).

The only ingredient in your salt should be salt.

Oryx’s full-flavoured black pepper is sourced exclusively from small, independent co-operative farmers in Madagascar where the berries are grown without chemicals, hand-harvested and sorted.

ORYX DESERT SALT IS A NATURAL FIT FOR NATURAL GROCERS

Oryx Desert Salt shares values with Natural Grocers such as being affordable, as well as supporting a regenerating environment.  Oryx grinders are fitted with long-lasting ceramic grinders instead of plastic, which end up grinding plastic into your food as the grinder teeth wear down.

Instead of throwing away grinder bottles once finished, Oryx grinders can be refilled, again, and again, and again. In 2025, Oryx customers helped save 1 224 900 grinders from landfill by purchasing refill boxes. Each time a bottle is refilled, the grinder becomes more cost effective. Refill not landfill.

Oryx Desert Salt is delighted to be selected as a supplier of salt and pepper on Natural Grocers’ shelves.

ABOUT ORYX DESERT SALT

Oryx Desert Salt is a well-established South African brand, known for producing naturally organic, pollution-free salt sourced from the pristine Kalahari Desert. Deep within the desert, lies a remote saltpan where crystal salt is harvested from underground brine aquifers situated amongst ancient Dwyka rock formations tested to be 280-300 million years old, and then sun-dried under the hot Kalahari sun.  The result is a 100% pure, naturally organic, nutritious salt.

Oryx Desert Salt is sustainable, coming from an ever-renewable and self-replenishing source in the Kalahari. Refillable, stylish glass bottles with long-lasting ceramic grinder heads (so no plastic particles are ground into food!) encourage customers to refill their grinders over and over by buying value-for-money refill boxes. Refill not Landfill.

The iconic Oryx horns are also available in Whole Foods Market stores and World Market in the USA, travels in style on JetBlue airlines and Amtrak and is distributed to 20+ countries.

Oryx Desert Salt is a household brand nationwide in South Africa.
