Onion Steaks on the Braai

Makes 7 onion steaks

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4-7 onions* - we used red onions
  • ½ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp soya sauce
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • 1 ½ tsp Oryx BBQ salt

*depending on the size of onion, you can get 1-2 steaks from it

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Soak enough thick wooden kebab sticks in water at least 30 minutes before using them.
  2. Top and tail the onions, and decide how thick you want your steak. 😉 Aim for at least 3 cm; you should get 1 or 2 steaks from each onion.
  3. In a small saucepan, gently heat up the olive oil, soya sauce, honey and BBQ salt, stirring until the honey has dissolved.
  4. Braai the onions over hot coals, brushing them with your BBQ-honey mixture each time you turn them. Cook until the onions are to your liking, and the sauce is finished. Sprinkle with more BBQ salt to taste.
