    Our Founder Sam’s Story

Hi, I’m Samantha Skyring. Fourteen years ago, as a single mom with a toddler on my hip, I sold my home, and bought 34 tonnes - about 11 elephants’ worth - of the purest salt from the Kalahari Desert.
When I discovered this salt - harvested from an ancient underground brine lake deep in the Kalahari Desert - I felt something shift. It wasn’t just clean. It felt alive.

At the time, I was a newly single mother starting over. I needed to create a way to support myself and my son - but I was determined to do it differently. I wanted to build something rooted in integrity, guided by nature, and designed to truly make a difference. Oryx Desert Salt began as a one-woman operation, packing salt grinders on my dining table. Slowly, through farmers’ markets, health shops, and word of mouth, it began to grow.

Today, Oryx is a team of 45+ incredible humans and is found in over 23 countries, served on airlines, in top restaurants, and in homes around the world.Even as the business has grown,my focus remains the same: to offer salt that’s pure, purposeful, and trusted by those who care about what they put into their bodies.Salt is not just something we taste - it’s something we need. But not all salt is the same.

    Our Story

Every culture has a creation story and businesses are no different. We honour our beginnings. Not just the ancient source of our salt in the pristine Kalahari desert, but also the origin story of how Oryx Desert Salt first began.
When Samantha Skyring decided to walk 120km over 7 days through the Namib Desert to the Skeleton Coast in July 2000, she had no idea this experience would initiate the creation of her business, Oryx Desert Salt.During this walk she had several powerful and remarkable face-to-face encounters with Oryx Gazella (gemsbok). It was these experiences which immediately sprang to mind during the process of creating a new brand for desert salt from the Kalahari. Researching the Oryx, Sam was staggered to discover that in a few rare instances, Oryx have gone their entire lives without drinking water. Their hair is hygroscopic (like tiny straws)and so absorbs the moisture from the desert dew at night directly into their bodies, hydrating hyperdermically. Succulents also swell with the dew offering nutrition as well as hydration. However, Oryx cannot survive more than a few months without licking salt for the sodium chloride, minerals and trace elements vital for survival in the harsh conditions of the Kalahari Desert. And so the Oryx, with its striking colouring and majestic presence, became the symbolic icon for Oryx Desert Salt.

Essential for the life you want to live
